About Fret Wire

Fret wire is one of the most underrated variables in guitar playability and tone. The crown width determines how much surface area contacts the string, while the crown height affects bending ease and how close your fingers feel to the fingerboard. Nickel silver is the most common material — warm-feeling under the fingers and easy to work with, though it wears faster than alternatives. Stainless steel frets last significantly longer and have a slightly brighter tone, while EVO Gold alloy falls in between with a distinctive gold appearance. Common profiles range from vintage-small (like the Dunlop 6150 or Jescar 45080) to medium-jumbo (Dunlop 6130) and full jumbo (Dunlop 6100), each suiting a different style of play.
